Sovereign Metals with high-quality graphite

5th September 2024 Sovereign Metals with high-quality graphite

Sovereign Metals has informed that it has achieved outstanding results in latest downstream testwork at ProGraphite GmbH in Germany. Its Kasiya natural flake graphite has shown performance characteristics that stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the best in the industry, including leading Chinese anode material manufacturers like BTR New Material Group.

Key Highlights:

  • First Cycle Efficiency (FCE): Kasiya’s CSPG samples achieved FCEs of 94.2% to 95.8%, surpassing the 95% threshold that marks the highest quality in natural graphite anode materials under Chinese standards.
  • Purity and Performance: Our testwork produced spherical graphite with an exceptional purity of 99.99%. The coated and carbonised CSPG exhibited very low BET specific surface areas (2.0 m²/g and lower) and high tap densities (1.11-1.18 g/cm³), crucial for enhancing lithium-ion battery efficiency and lifespan.
  • Initial Discharge Capacity: The CSPG met and exceeded the benchmark for top-tier anode materials, achieving initial discharge capacities of 362-366 mAh/g.

These results are a major leap forward for Kasiya as fast-track discussions with potential offtake partners. The testwork indicates that Kasiya’s natural flake graphite is comparable to the high-spec materials produced by BTR, a market leader with key offtake agreements with global automotive giants like Ford.

Excellent feedstock

Managing Director Frank Eagar has shared his excitement about quality of the product: “These test results confirm that Kasiya graphite concentrate is poised to be an excellent feedstock for the battery industry. The ease of purification to very high grades, combined with the exceptional first cycle efficiencies and battery discharge capacities, positions Kasiya as a potential leader in graphite supply outside of China. With one of the largest graphite resources globally, low operating costs, and the lowest global warming potential, Kasiya offers significant competitive advantages.”
