KGHM and Sagamok Anishnawbek sign IBA for the Victoria Project

18th December 2025 KGHM and Sagamok Anishnawbek sign IBA for the Victoria Project

KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. has made a press release informing about the signing of an Impact and Benefit Agreement (IBA) with the Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation for the Victoria mining project in Canada.

Hostric agreement

The historic agreement was signed on behalf of Sagamok Anishnawbek by Chief Angus Toulouse. KGHM International was represented by Marek Bednarz, President of the Management Board, Michał Jezioro, Vice President responsible for Indigenous Relations, and Steven Dunlop, General Manager Canada.

The agreement represents another important milestone in the long-term cooperation between KGHM and Indigenous communities in the Sudbury region. Earlier this year, KGHM concluded a similar agreement with the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek First Nation, further reinforcing the company’s commitment to responsible mining, social dialogue, and respectful partnerships across all jurisdictions in which it operates.

Important step for the Victoria Project

As emphasized by Szydło Andrzej, President of the Management Board of KGHM Polska Miedź S.A.: “The agreement with the Sagamok Anishnawbek community is an important step in the development of our Canadian Victoria Project. Following this year’s agreement with the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek First Nation, it is further proof of the KGHM Group’s commitment to social dialogue and good-neighbourly relations, regardless of where we conduct our business activities. I am confident that cooperation with the Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation will be based on partnership and will bring value to both parties.”

Trust and partnership

The IBA is the outcome of many years of relationship-building based on partnership and cooperation, formally initiated in 2014 with an agreement covering the Advanced Exploration phase. Since then, both parties have worked closely on infrastructure development within the project area and on securing the permits required for full project execution. The signing of the IBA is a natural continuation of this cooperation, providing KGHM International with long-term stability throughout the entire life cycle of the future mine.

At the same time, the agreement ensures tangible economic and development benefits for the Sagamok Anishnawbek community, from the construction phase, through production, and ultimately to mine closure. It defines principles related to employment, training, business opportunities, knowledge sharing, access to project lands, and active participation in environmental protection activities.

Aboout Victoria Project

The Victoria Project is located approximately 35 km west of Sudbury and involves the development of an underground copper-nickel mine with an estimated mine life of 14 years.
