Australia Takes a Leap in Critical Minerals Production

13th February 2025 Australia Takes a Leap in Critical Minerals Production

Australia is set to strengthen its role in the global energy transition with the passing of the Albanese Government’s Critical Minerals Production Tax Incentive (CMPTI) legislation.

Critical Minerals Production Tax Incentive

The CMPTI:

  • is one of the largest resource-sector support packages ever passed by Federal Parliament,
  • aims to boost domestic production and processing of critical minerals and rare earths, creating jobs and diversifying global supply chains.
  • is valued of $7 billion investment over the next decade, offering a refundable tax credit of 10% on eligible production costs from 1 July 2027 to 30 June 2040.

Big deal for resource

Federal Resources Minister Madeleine King called the move a game changer: “The passing of this legislation is a historic moment for the resources industry and a big deal for resource states like Western Australia and Queensland. By processing more of these minerals here in Australia we will create jobs and diversify global supply chains”

Critical minerals and rare earths are essential for energy transition technologies like solar panels and batteries or defence technologies like submarines and aircraft.

Despite strong industry support, the Coalition opposed the bill. Minister King criticized the opposition, saying: „Peter Dutton is more interested in playing politics than supporting our resources industry and this is evidence he has turned his back on our national security, on our resources sector and on hardworking Australians. Peter Dutton and the Western Australian Liberals have turned their back on the Western Australian critical minerals and rare earths industry.”

Greener and secure future

The legislation aims for Australia to lead the way in producing the materials that power a greener and more secure future.
