Freeport Indonesia resets Grasberg recovery timeline as underground challenges reshape production outlook

The recovery journey at one of the world’s most important copper operations just became longer,  and far more revealing about the realities of modern underground mining. Freeport Indonesia has officially adjusted the production recovery timeline for its Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) underground mine, with full operations now expected to resume in early 2028 instead of 2027. The decision follows the severe mudflow incident that disrupted the operation in September last year and continues to impact underground logistics and ore handling systems.

Adjustment to the production recovery target

According to company spokesperson Katri Krisnati, “Adjustment to the GBC production recovery target was made due to additional work on logistics and ore handling infrastructure at the underground mine following the incident last September.”

The revised timeline underscores how increasingly complex geotechnical conditions, groundwater management and underground transport systems are becoming defining challenges for deep underground mining worldwide, especially at large-scale block cave operations.

Operations in the recovery phase

Freeport Indonesia CEO Tony Wenas confirmed that the mine is currently operating at only 40–50% of normal production levels. “Operations are currently in the recovery phase following the GBC underground mine incident, with production currently at around 40% to 50%. The company targets a return to full capacity by early 2028,” Wenas stated.

The company also revealed that wetter-than-expected underground material conditions forced modifications to the ore transportation system and supporting infrastructure. Groundwater infiltration following the September shutdown reportedly altered ore characteristics, creating additional challenges for train loading systems and material handling efficiency underground. Importantly, parts of the underground operation unaffected by the incident restarted in April 2026, signaling that Freeport is pursuing a phased operational recovery rather than a full-stop remediation approach.

The Grasberg complex remains one of the most strategically important copper and gold mining assets globally, particularly at a time when demand for copper is accelerating due to electrification, AI infrastructure, power grids, EVs and defense technologies.

What makes this development especially significant for the mining industry is that it highlights a broader trend: future mining competitiveness will increasingly depend not only on ore grades and reserves, but on underground resilience, water management, digital monitoring and adaptive infrastructure engineering.
