Impossible Metals with a huge milestone in deep-sea mining

28th April 2025 Impossible Metals with a huge milestone in deep-sea mining

A significant milestone in sustainable resource development has just been reached. Impossible Metals, a US-based innovator in deep-sea mining, has made a press release announcing that it has officially submitted a request to begin leasing processes for exploring and potentially mining critical minerals in the deep sea off the coast of American Samoa.

This is a historic first: Impossible Metals is the pioneering company to request a lease for critical minerals under the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act of 1953, regulated by the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM).

Revolutionizing mining with technology and responsibility

Impossible Metals has developed the only autonomous underwater robot (AUV) designed for selective harvesting. This groundbreaking robot combines advanced AI, robotics, and a buoyancy engine to: hover above the seabed, accurately identify and avoid nodules with visible marine life, minimize disruption to native habitats and biodiversity.

The result? The lowest environmental impact and cost among land and deep-sea mining methods, setting a new gold standard for responsible resource extraction.

Oliver Gunasekara, CEO and Co-Founder of Impossible Metals stated: “Impossible Metals’ innovative approach to selective harvesting of minerals from the deep sea will revolutionize the mining industry and ensure that the United States remains a leader in sustainability, technology, and clean energy”.

Collaborating for a sustainable future

Moreover, Impossible Metals will work closely with the people and leaders of American Samoa, the Department of the Interior, Congress, scientists, the environmental community, and the public to ensure high environmental and safety standards.

John Wasko, Executive Director, American Samoa Economic Development Council (ASEDC) an observer NGO that is a task partner in the project, has added: “American Samoa welcomes the start of a deep-sea minerals industry that will bring significant economic growth, support national security, and create jobs.”

The ASEDC task is subjected to assuring South Pacific nations to create an equitable mining code favorable to their sovereign ownership of seabed critical minerals in their EEZ.

A step toward a cleaner, smarter future

The designated area is believed to hold deposits of critical minerals such as nickel, cobalt, copper, magnesium, and rare earth elements, essential for clean energy technologies and defense. With this project, the U.S. moves closer to establishing a secure domestic supply chain, competing globally, and advancing clean energy innovations.
