KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. with permission for the construction of its photovoltaic installation

4th January 2024 KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. with permission for the construction of its photovoltaic installation

Permits for the construction

At the end of 2023, KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. received three permits for the construction of photovoltaic farm projects with a total installed capacity of 7.5 MW. The investment will be located on the premises of a branch of the copper company Huta Miedzi Głogów. Each set of installations will be located in the vicinity of receiving installations, including existing MV transformer stations, to which new projects are planned to be connected.

Importance of the photovoltaic

After receiving the permission Tomasz Zdzikot took an emphasis on the importance of the photovoltaic project on KGHM’s development. He stated that investments in photovoltaic farms are becoming a strategic element of KGHM’s development plans. The modern world demands from us, industry leaders, not only effective production but also ecological responsibility. We know perfectly well that copper is a key raw material for the world’s energy transformation. By introducing photovoltaic farms into our structure of generation assets, we diversify the method of generating electricity in KGHM, reduce costs, and protect ourselves against market instability in the energy sector.”

Moreover, Mateusz Wodejko has expressed about KGHM’s potential as well as company synergy in this type of project. He explained: „The location of new photovoltaic farms directly on the premises of the KGHM is an excellent example of implementing renewable energy investments using the huge potential of real estate belonging to the copper company.”

Future goal

KGHM is planning further renewable energy projects which are still in the investment preparation process. The total capacity of the current photovoltaic project is over 200 MW.

Right now KGHM can cover a ca of 17% of its overall demand for electricity in the company. The future KGHM’s strategic goal is to cover at least 50% of the demand for electricity from its sources, including Renewable Energy Sources by 2030.
