Japan’s discovery

Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo and the Nippon Foundation have discovered more than 200 million tonnes of manganese nodules rich in essential battery metals within Japan’s exclusive economic zone in the Pacific Ocean.

Key Findings

The nodules, found near Minamitorishima Island, are located at depths of about 5,500 meters.

These polymetallic nodules contain significant amounts of cobalt, nickel, copper, and manganese.

Estimated deposits include 610,000 tonnes of cobalt and 740,000 tonnes of nickel.

Strategic Implications

Starting next year, large-scale extraction of these nodules is expected to commence, with plans to develop them as locally sourced materials by 2026 through a joint venture involving multiple Japanese companies.

The University of Tokyo will provide academic support through detailed analysis of the extracted materials.

Challenges and Opportunities

Mining at such depths presents significant technical challenges. BMO analyst Colin Hamilton highlights the complexity and potential as a test case for deep-sea mining’s benefits versus disadvantages.

Major global banks have introduced policies against funding deep-sea exploration and extraction, reflecting environmental concerns.

Future Demand

The demand for nickel and cobalt is projected to surge by 400% to 600% as battery technology evolves.

The Metals Company recently produced the world’s first cobalt sulfate exclusively from seafloor polymetallic nodules.

Regulatory Landscape

The International Seabed Authority (ISA) is working on regulations for underwater mining, with plans to finalize by 2025, although mining could start as early as July. Japan’s innovative approach to securing vital resources underscores the critical role of sustainable practices and technological advancements in the global transition to battery-powered technologies.
