19th September 2024 Road construction reveals the entrance to the ancient tin mine in Cornwall
Unmapped tin mine
During the construction of Cornwall’s new £86 million St Austell to A30 link road, workers made a surprising discovery—an entrance to a long-lost tin mine. The 32ft long fissure, believed to be the sloped entry to an “unmapped” former tin mine, was found during site preparation. This unexpected find highlights Cornwall’s rich mining history, but despite the surprise, the road’s completion is still on track for Spring 2025.
Project on track
According to The Express the spokesperson has stated: “We have recently uncovered two features along the route and investigation works are underway to determine the best course of remediation. We do not anticipate any delays or additional costs as a consequence of this event and the road is still anticipated to be fully opened in spring 2025.”
Cornwall Council has reassured that this discovery won’t lead to delays or additional costs, with investigations underway to determine the best remediation. Locals have campaigned for this 3.9-mile road since 2014, and it promises to be a vital route for residents and businesses alike.
