Summary of the World Mining Congress 2023

27th September 2023 Summary of the World Mining Congress 2023

Congratulation

The World Mining Congress Chairmanship would like to congratulate Dr. Hua Guo (the Chair of the WMC2023) for organizing the World Mining Congress 2023 in Brisbane Australia.

Below we would like to publicize the direct message from the Chair of the WMC 2023, Dr Hua Guo who summarized the World Mining Congress 2023 event.

Thank You from the WMC 2023 Chair

We concluded the 26th World Mining Congress, the first one ever held in Australia, on 30 June 2023 and it was a huge success in every way!

The Congress brought together 3,426 delegates from 71 countries around a unifying theme of 'Resourcing tomorrow: Creating value for society’.

This theme resonated across the four days of the event, as over 700 national and international presentations were delivered and we heard repeated calls from leaders in industry and government for greater collaboration to respond to the global urgency to decarbonise to ensure a sustainable future for all.

Mining is crucial to resource the transformational changes required to achieve emissions reduction targets for our planet. Time is our greatest challenge and cross-collaboration between sectors and nations is key to delivering the necessary materials and technologies.

On behalf of the Australian Organising Committee, I thank all our Plenary and Keynote speakers, presenters at the Congress and various symposia and forums, all sponsors and exhibitors for showcasing their various important roles in our industry and all delegates for your active participation throughout this inspiring event. And many of you have spoken to the media as well, presenting the Congress to the wider world. Congratulations to all for your many successes at the Congress.

None of this would have happened without the World Mining Congress International Organising Committee, which was elected in 2016 to hold the Congress in Brisbane, following the strong bid led by CSIRO, in partnership with AusIMM and supported by the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre (BCEC), Tourism and Events Queensland and the Brisbane Economic Development Agency.

It would not be possible to put on an event of this scale without such significant sponsorship. Thank you to all the sponsors of the Congress, particularly our Host State Partner, the Queensland Government; our Major Sponsor, the Australian Government Department of Industry, Science and Resources; and our Diamond Sponsors – Anglo American, BHP, FMG Fortescue, Glencore, Rio Tinto and The University of Queensland.

I would like to add my personal and sincere thanks to my fellow Organising Committee members, the Program and its Stream committees, the Sponsorship and Exhibition, Marketing and International Advisory Committees, the ICMS Australasia team and so many of my CSIRO colleagues, who all worked tirelessly to bring this extraordinary global event to life.

My thanks also go to our security, catering, events and BCEC staff and wonderful volunteers who all looked after us, keeping us safe, fed and on time during the Congress.

Delegates, you brought your enthusiasm, passion, vision, and insights and I thank every single one of you for being with us in Brisbane at the 26th World Mining Congress.

Mining must change. Mining is changing.

This Congress was part of that change and in years to come, I am confident we will look back with pride at what we started together in Brisbane in 2023.

I wish you all the best in your respective endeavours as you contribute to these changes that are so crucial for the future of the planet and the generations to come.

Many ideas were generously shared throughout the Congress. For those colleagues who were not able to attend in person, I am pleased to advise that the virtual proceedings and presentations are now available, enabling you to access the latest thinking from brilliant minds of the mining and resources sector around the world. The Congress Proceedings are completed but currently being indexed to facilitate searching the contents.

Finally, I offer my heartfelt congratulations to Peru for being elected as Host of the 27th World Mining Congress, and my very best wishes for every success.

Farewell for now friends and I look forward to seeing you in beautiful Lima in 2026!
