China’s reported 30 million tonne uranium discovery could reshape the global nuclear supply chain

1st September 2026 China’s reported 30 million tonne uranium discovery could reshape the global nuclear supply chain

A reported uranium discovery beneath China’s Ordos Desert in Inner Mongolia is drawing attention far beyond the mining sector. The deposit, identified in 2025 and reported by the cited sources at more than 30 million tonnes of uranium, is being presented as one of the largest uranium discoveries ever identified and potentially a major step toward greater Chinese nuclear fuel self-sufficiency.

The timing is particularly significant. China is rapidly expanding nuclear power as part of a broader strategy to diversify its energy mix, reduce reliance on fossil fuels and strengthen domestic energy security. The sources report 11 reactors currently under construction, making access to domestic uranium increasingly strategically important.

From geological discovery to energy security

If the scale reported for Ordos is confirmed and commercially recoverable, greater domestic production could reduce China’s dependence on imported uranium and provide additional security for the expansion of its nuclear fleet. It could also influence future trade flows and China’s position within the international nuclear-fuel market. China is already advancing its uranium-mining capabilities. China National Nuclear Corporation says its third-generation CO₂+O₂ in-situ leaching technology can economically develop uranium deposits previously considered difficult to exploit, combining automated operations, centralized remote control and closed-loop recovery systems.

Could ordos change the global uranium market?

The ultimate impact will depend on ore grades, recoverable resources, production rates, development costs and the pace at which the deposit can be brought into commercial operation. The reports currently circulating do not provide enough independently verified technical information to establish those parameters.

Mining at the center of the nuclear expansion

The Ordos story nevertheless highlights a broader transformation underway in the global mining industry. As countries expand nuclear generation to strengthen energy security and reduce emissions, uranium supply is becoming an increasingly strategic component of national industrial policy.

For China, a major domestic uranium resource could strengthen the connection between mineral security and its rapidly expanding nuclear industry. For international uranium producers, utilities and investors, the critical question is now whether the scale attributed to Ordos can be technically validated and converted into sustained production.

If it can, the implications could extend well beyond China into global uranium supply, nuclear-fuel security and the geopolitical architecture of the energy transition.
