PRNewswire has announced a pivotal milestone for the Copper World project in Pima County, Arizona! Copper World. a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hudbay Minerals Inc., has partnered with a coalition of union building trades to sign a Letter of Commitment, reinforcing its dedication to collaboration, safety, and excellence in construction.

Union partnership

This agreement highlights the Company’s commitment to providing union contractors a significant role in building one of the largest economic development projects in Southern Arizona’s history. Together with union partners, including the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers Local 627, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 570, International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental, and Reinforcing Ironworker Local 847, and others, the Company is setting a foundation for a world-class construction environment.

Project highlights

This project enables the creation of 400+ direct jobs and up to 3,000 indirect jobs in Arizona. Moreover, it is anticipated $850M contribution in U.S. taxes over Copper World’s 20-year life, including $420M in state & local taxes. The support for the domestic supply chain with „Arizona Copper Made For America”, reduces carbon footprints by eliminating overseas refining.

Mutual respect

Javier Del Rio, ICD.D Senior VP of Hudbay’s U.S. Business Unit has a expressed a key points of the success in this project: „The expertise and dedication of our local trade unions are vital to the success of large-scale projects like Copper World, and we are pleased to have their highly skilled workforce as a key component of our construction team.” He has added: „Our commitment to a Project Labor Agreement strengthens our partnership with the unions, guaranteeing high-quality, well-paying jobs that uphold robust safety standards, provide essential benefits to workers, and support local families. By collaborating with skilled union labor, Copper World will be built to the highest safety and craftsmanship standards.”

Jacob Evenson, Business Manager of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Ship Builders, Forgers and Helpers Local 627 expressed the strength of this letter of Commitment by saying: “This letter of commitment signifies mutual respect and understanding for a productive work environment for the workforce that will build Copper World. The timely and efficient construction of the Copper World project will require a substantial number of employees from construction and supporting crafts, and the unions look forward to working together to furnish a highly skilled workforce of our members to this critical project.”

Copper World is more than a project, it’s a cornerstone for Arizona’s future and a leap toward sustainable, secure U.S. infrastructure.
