9th November 2023 Lucapa Diamond unearths second largest diamond to date at Lulo

On the 8th of November, Lucapa Diamond announced that it had recovered a 235-carat diamond at Lulo Alluvial Mine in Angola. This is the second largest diamond to date and the 40th +100-carat diamond to be recovered from Lulo since the operation commenced.
The diamond is classified as IIa. The stone was uncovered in Mining Block 550, which is immediately south of Mining Block 19. Up to today, this area has yielded 8, +100-carat diamonds.
Lucapa Diamonds Managing Director Nick Selby said “Lulo continues to demonstrate it is a prolific producer of large diamonds. To unearth three +100 carat diamonds – with two being over 200 carats in such a short space of time from different areas of the concession, makes us more determined to find the primary source, by dedicating even more resources to the exploration program.”

This month Lucapa Diamond has also uncovered a 208-carat diamond at Mining Block 31st.
Lulo Alluvial Mine began commercial production in 2015. In 2016 Lulo uncovered 404 carat white stone (‘4th February Stone’), the largest ever Angola diamond. The mine is known for the highest dollar-per-carat price of its alluvial diamond.
Lulo Alluvial Mine
Lulo Alluvial Mine is an open pit mine that operates over alluvial/placer (diamond-bearing alluvial gravels) and kimberlite deposits. It spans across a concession area of 3,000km² on the crossing of the Lucapa Graben geological belt and Cuango basin. The Cuango belt is renowned for the the majority of kimberlite mine. The 35-year mining license extends across 218km², including 50km of the Cacuilo River. The alluvial exploration concentrates on a 50km section of the Cacuilo River.
