4th February 2025 Lundin with a decision about mining operations at Alcaparrosa
In the press release, Lundin Mining Corporation informed that its subsidiary, Minera Ojos del Salado, has received a notice from Chile’s Superintendencia del Medio Ambiente (SMA) following investigations into the 2022 sinkhole at the Alcaparrosa mine. The notice imposes a $3.3 million fine and confirms the continued closure of the mine due to four identified violations.
Sinkhole incident
Mining operations at Alcaparrosa have been suspended since the 2022 incident. The mine’s reserves were excluded from the Company’s reserve statements and future production plans at that time. Importantly, this does not impact Lundin Mining’s Candelaria operations, which achieved record production in late 2024 and are forecast to produce 140,000–150,000 tonnes of copper in 2025.
Future steps
Lundin Mining has fully supported the SMA’s investigation, offering monitoring technology, expert analyses, and detailed studies. The Company is now reviewing the notification and determining next steps regarding the alleged breaches of its environmental permit at Minera Ojos del Salado.
