24th January 2025 MP Materials reached the milestone in the U.S. rare earth magnet supply chain!
MP Materials has made a press release informing that it has begun commercial production of neodymium-praseodymium (NdPr) metal and trial production of sintered NdFeB magnets in its facility in Fort Worth, Texas. These breakthroughs mark a significant step toward reestablishing a fully integrated, domestic rare earth magnet production ecosystem for the first time in decades.
Historical milestone
James Litinsky, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of MP Materials said “This milestone marks a major step forward in restoring a fully integrated rare earth magnet supply chain in the United States”. Moreover, he has added: “With record-setting upstream and midstream production at Mountain Pass and both metal and magnet production underway at Independence, we have reached a significant turning point for MP and U.S. competitiveness in a vital sector.”
Why it matters?
The NdFeB magnets are critical to vehicles, drones, robotics, electronics, and aerospace systems. For decades, the U.S. has relied heavily on foreign sources for these essential components.
By producing approximately 1,000 metric tons of NdFeB magnets annually starting in late 2025, Independence will supply magnets to General Motors and other manufacturers, with raw materials sourced from MP Materials Mountain Pass facility in California.
In 2024, the company hit record production at Mountain Pass, including over 45,000 metric tons of rare earth oxides and 1,300 metric tons of NdPr oxide. Together, these accomplishments bring MP Materials closer to restoring U.S. leadership in this vital sector.
This is more than just a milestone—it’s a turning point for U.S. competitiveness in rare earth manufacturing.
