Nuevo Linares potential new lead mining project

17th November 2023 Nuevo Linares potential new lead mining project

Nuevo Linares

INSERSA and Keogen Energy are evaluating the possibility of restarting the lead mining hub in Linares. The main aim of the “Nuevo Linares” mining project is to evaluate the quantity and quality of the Pb deposit. The region is known for its mining history and lead deposits, however, due to the lack of profitability the last mine was closed in the 1990s. The increasing prices of lead allowed us to reconsider the decision to restart the operation.

Positive results

After two years of study which includes geophysical and geochemical research Gonzalo Mayoral, director of the “Nuevo Linares” project, assures that “it is progressing very well”.

After the promising results, the one more step is the construction of an access ramp for 350 meters. The cost of this research ramp (2,300 meters), exceeds 10 million euros.

Lead for renewable energy

Kerogen and INSERSA’s preliminary studies of the El Cobre-Matacabras-San Juan predict the 10-year operation. It is predicted that the mine should produce 25,000 tons of lead per year. Exploited lead will be applied in vehicle batteries and large-scale storage of renewable energy systems.
