22nd September 2025 All eyes on the Indonesian mining scene
This week, Indonesia represented by The Association of Indonesian Mining Professionals (PERHAPI) had the honor of hosting the 106th International Organizing Committee (IOC) meeting of the World Mining Congress (WMC). The meeting was held alongside Mining Indonesia, organized by Pamerindo Indonesia at JIExpo Convention Centre & Theatre in Jakarta.
106th IOC meeting
Although the IOC meeting is a regular coordination session, it was no less significant. Delegates from 14 countries, including Indonesia, China, India, Peru, Japan, Iran, Australia, Canada, Poland, and Slovakia, gathered to share updates. The agenda included preparations for WMC 2026 in Peru, the proposal for WMC 2028 in Anhui, China, and the bid for WMC 2031 in Vancouver, Canada.
What stood out was the level of government commitment behind the bids from China and Canada, each pledging sponsorship support worth around US$625,000. Unfortunately, unlike these examples, Indonesia has yet to receive similar backing from its government, despite being a major global supplier of mining commodities, critical to industries worldwide.
Hybrid meeting
The WMC board was represented by the Marek Cała WMC Chairperson, Jacek Skiba The Secretary General and prof. Leopold Weber.
The Association of Indonesian Mining Professionals (PERHAPI) was represented by board members, including Poltak T. Sinaga, Tonny Gultom, Resvani, Wisnu Salman, Muhammad Toha, Rezki Syahrir, and Ardhi Ishak, and many others.
Distinguished guest
This event was also an opportunity for Indonesia Members to reconnect with Prof. Agus P Sasmito, a distinguished Indonesian academic now at McGill University, representing Canada.
Mining Indonesia
The WMC event was held alongside Mining Indonesia. This is the largest international mining equipment exhibition in Southeast Asia, serving as a premier platform for Indonesia’s mining industry to connect, collaborate, and conduct business. Now in its 23rd edition, the exhibition has earned a strong reputation among industry professionals worldwide. It brings together global mining leaders and key stakeholders to showcase cutting-edge products, technologies, and services all under one roof at the Jakarta International Expo (JIExpo).
In 2024 approximately 33k people were participating in the event and around 1.1k companies were exhibiting. Among association partners were, among others: Asosiasi Jasa Pertambangan Indonesia (ASPINDO), Asosiasi Penambang Nikel Indonesia, Djakarta Mining Club, Indonesia Heavy Equipment Expert Association, The Association of Indonesian Mining Professionals (PERHAPI), and WiME Indonesia.
