5th February 2024 Restart of the Langer Heinrich mine
Almost complited
Paladin Energy has announced that on 20th January the first ore was exploited from the Langer Heinrich Mine in Namibia. The mine was placed into care and maintenance in 2018 due to sustained low uranium prices. In June 2023 it was decided that the production would be resumed. According to the World Nuclear News, the mining project is completed in 93%. The last works related to the: introduction of stockpile ore, growth and debottlenecking, repairs and refurbishment, commissioning, and hangover to LGM operation have remained. It is planned that the mine will be in operation mode by the end of Q1 2024, however, lower contractor productivity by the end of 2023 may result in a hangover in Q2 2024.
Ian Purdy has stated: „After more than six years of care and maintenance it is exceptionally pleasing to see production activities recommence at the Langer Heinrich Mine, with first ore feed to the processing plant achieved in January”
Langer Heinrich Mine
The deposit was discovered in 1973 after a government-sponsored airborne radiometric survey of the area. The deposit was previously owned by Glencore and Aztec Resources Limited. In 2002 Paladin Energy acquired Langer Heinrich Uranium (Pty) Ltd. and its assets from Aztec Resources. Over 10 years track record 43 million pounds of U3O8 ere produced. The mining was suspended in 2016 and the production was stopped in 2018. Paladin Energy informs that the mine is projected to produce over 77 million pounds of U3O8 in the future.
