Results on Australians’ attitudes toward renewable energy transition survey

23rd April 2024 Results on Australians’ attitudes toward renewable energy transition survey

Survey

Recently CSIRO unveils the most extensive survey ever conducted on Australians’ sentiments regarding the transition to renewable energy. The survey from August to September 2023 engaged over 6,700 Australians from various backgrounds.

As Australia progresses towards a low-carbon energy paradigm, redefining energy generation, distribution, storage, export, and consumption, the survey delved into public attitudes towards this renewable energy shift. Moreover, it examined perceptions regarding current and planned renewable infrastructure within Australia, including solar farms, onshore and offshore wind farms, and the requisite transmission lines vital for integrating renewable energy into the electricity grid.

Affordability, energy self-reliance, and emissions reductions

According to the survey top three priorities of the energy transition are affordability, energy self-reliance, and emissions reductions, with reliability being a close fourth.

Based on the survey CSIRO concludes that: “most Australians supported change towards an energy system that relies more on renewables. Energy affordability was a high priority for most people, whether or not they were struggling to pay bills, and views differed on the speed and extent of the transition, with almost half (47 per cent) preferring a moderate paced transition scenario compared to faster and more extensive change (40 per cent). 13 per cent preferred a slower transition.”

Dr. Andrea Walton, who is involved in the project, emphasized the survey’s comprehensive nature, ensuring representation from diverse demographics, including individuals residing near existing or proposed renewable energy sites. She ensured that: “the value of such a large survey is we can report with a higher degree of certainty what a range of people think”. Moreover dr. Walton highlighted the moderate attitudes prevailing among Australians towards coexisting with renewable energy infrastructure, reflecting a broad willingness to support or tolerate the development of such projects. Based on the research she has stated: “Many Australians held generally moderate attitudes towards living near renewable energy infrastructure, suggesting a broad willingness to support, or at least tolerate, the development of solar farms, onshore and offshore wind farms, and associated transmission line infrastructure.”

Partnership

Collaborating with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment, and Water, the survey indicated comparable responses between metropolitan and regional communities, albeit with a slightly more negative outlook observed among rural residents, attributed to their proximity to ongoing or prospective developments.

Summary

In summary, the survey underscores communities’ desire for transparent and comprehensive information regarding renewable energy projects, including their benefits and potential drawbacks, to foster informed decision-making and ensure alignment with local needs and environmental considerations.
