8th January 2025 Stibnite Gold and Antimony Project Approved!
The Biden administration has issued the final mining permit for Perpetua Resources’ Stibnite project in Idaho. It is a major milestone for Perpetua Resources that will allow for securing and boosting of domestic production of antimony. Antimony is vital for the production of: weapons, solar panels, and flame retardants.
Project information
The project will supply 35% of America’s annual antimony needs by 2028. It is expected that it will allow on production of approximately 450,000 ounces of gold annually, ensuring dual revenue streams.
Backed by the Pentagon with $60M in funding, the Stibnite Gold and Antimony Project emphasizes its strategic importance. Moreover, the Forest Service approval follows an 8-year review, incorporating environmental studies and consultations with Indigenous groups.
Environmental approve
Matthew Davis, the USDA Forest Service’s forest supervisor stated: “I have taken into consideration the degree to which the (mine’s) environmental design features, monitoring and mitigation measures will, where feasible, minimise adverse environmental impacts on (federal lands).”
Perpetua CEO Jon Cherry expressed: „Every detail of this project was examined with a fine-tooth comb.”
While the project addresses critical mineral independence, concerns remain from Idaho’s Nez Perce tribe regarding salmon populations. Efforts to address these concerns were included in the permit review.
Resilience
As global antimony supply tensions rise, this project positions the U.S. for greater resilience.
