Water and tailings in the spotlight: A call for innovation, transparency, and technical excellence

6th August 2025 Water and tailings in the spotlight: A call for innovation, transparency, and technical excellence

On August 28–29 at the College of Engineers of Peru in Lima (San Isidro) the 2nd International Congress on Water and Tailings 2025 took place. This high-impact event convened leaders across the mining sector to explore one of its most critical and sensitive areas: the integrated management of water and tailings.

As global attention on sustainability intensifies, this Congress emerges as a vital platform to share technical solutions, governance strategies, and collaborative approaches to the growing challenges of tailings and water management.

We are not competing in tailings

Edgar Quiroz, a mining operations specialist and member of the congress’s advisory committee, stated: „we are not competing in tailings; any failure can affect an entire business in the country”. His words underline the urgency of operational discipline, innovation, and risk prevention.

2nd ICW&A aims

The key aims and scopes of the conference focused on integrated water and tailings management as a strategic necessity, technology adoption in tailings facilities at the same level as pits and plants, transparency and collaboration as pillars of a modern mining culture, and the importance of cross-sectoral learning and technical knowledge sharing.

Keynote speakers

The event was led by Ivan Babastre, Superintendent of Water Resources at Anglo American Quellaveco, and the Congress boasts a distinguished advisory committee, including: Edgar Quiróz (Mining Operations Consultant), Giovanni Anfossi Portugal (Mining Supervision Manager, OSINERGMIN), Richard Mera (Head of Tailings Electromechanics, Minsur S.A.), Wilder Sanchez Navarro (Water Treatment Expert), Jeny Panez (Nexa Resources), Alfonso Palacio Castilla, M.Sc. (Cerro de Pasco Resources Inc.), Fernando Alarcon Saenz (Chair, CT-200 Tailings Committee), Carlos Sánchez Romero (Minsur), Jorge Zafra (Minera Las Bambas).

World Mining Congress 2026 is comeing

With over 250 professionals and 30+ companies, including managers, plant supervisors, and tailings specialists, the event was shaping up to be a benchmark in technical excellence and practical dialogue. The next global platform for discussion is the World Mining Congress 2026, which will be held from 24 to 26 June 2026 in Lima. We invite everyone to participate in this high-level event.
