30th August 2024 Lucara Diamond did it again!
2,492-carat discovery
Lucara Diamond has informed in its press released about recovery of an extraordinary 2,492-carat diamond from our Karowe Diamond Mine in Botswana! This incredible find, one of the largest rough diamonds ever discovered, was detected using our state-of-the-art Mega Diamond Recovery (MDR) X-ray Transmission (XRT) technology, which was installed in 2017 to identify and preserve large, high-value diamonds. The stone was recovered from the EM/PK(S) kimberlite, the primary ore type that will continue to be a focus during the initial years of underground mining operations.
This discovery further cements Karowe’s reputation as a world-class diamond mine and reaffirms Lucara’s standing as a leading producer of large, exceptional diamonds. This 2,492-carat diamond joins an impressive list of remarkable finds from Karowe, including the 1,758-carat Sewelô and the 1,109-carat Lesedi La Rona.
Value of the XRT
William Lamb, President and CEO of Lucara, after the discovery has stated: „We are ecstatic about the recovery of this extraordinary diamond. This find not only showcases the remarkable potential of our Karowe Mine but also underscores the value of our strategic investment in advanced XRT technology. The ability to recover such a massive, high-quality stone intact is a testament to the effectiveness of our approach to diamond recovery and our commitment to maximizing value for our shareholders and stakeholders.”
He further emphasized, „This discovery reinforces Karowe’s status as a truly world-class diamond mine and highlights the ongoing success of our operational and underground development strategy.”
Beyond mining, Botswana’s diamond industry provides significant socio-economic benefits, supporting national development in key areas like education and healthcare. This exceptional find symbolizes Botswana’s continued rise as a global leader in diamond production, reflecting the nation’s success in harnessing its natural resources for the benefit of its people.
