19th March 2025 Strengthening U.S. and Congo Partnerships
President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) recently met U.S. lawmaker Ronny Jackson to discuss ongoing conflict in eastern Congo and opportunities for U.S. investment, as reported by Reuters. This meeting follows Washington’s openness to exploring critical minerals partnerships with Congo, a nation rich in cobalt, lithium, and uranium—essential resources for global technology and energy sectors.
We want to cooperate
In their discussion, Jackson emphasized the importance of creating a peaceful environment to attract American companies to invest in the DRC. He has stated: „We want to work so that American companies can come and invest and work in the DRC. And to do that, we have to make sure that there is a peaceful environment.” The long-standing conflict in eastern Congo, fueled by struggles over control of mineral wealth and regional instability, remains a key challenge.
Peace talks
While Congo has not disclosed specific proposals for deals with the U.S., the presidency highlighted its pursuit of diversified partnerships. Tshisekedi’s government is also engaging in peace talks in Angola to address the insurgency by M23 rebels.
Existing barriers
However, concerns linger. Byron Cabrol, point to infrastructure challenges, insecurity, corruption, and the significant presence of Chinese firms as potential barriers to U.S. mining investment.
