The future of mining starts with knowledge

17th June 2026 The future of mining starts with knowledge

The future of mining will not be shaped by technology alone. It will be built by the people who develop it, the researchers who advance it, and the institutions that prepare the next generation of industry leaders.

That vision will be on full display at the World Mining Congress (WMC) 2026, where academia will play a central role through the Academic Pavilion, a dedicated platform designed to connect students, researchers, professors, professionals, and industry stakeholders from around the world.

From June 24-26, the Lima Convention Center will become more than a venue for global mining dialogue. It will serve as a meeting point between industry and knowledge, highlighting the critical role education and research play in advancing a modern, responsible, and sustainable mining sector.

A global academic community under one roof

The Academic Pavilion will bring together 16 leading universities and specialized training institutions from Peru and abroad, creating a unique environment for collaboration, talent development, and innovation.

Participating institutions include some of Peru’s most respected academic centers, such as UTEC, PUCP, UNMSM, UNI, TECSUP, CETEMIN, and Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina, alongside universities from Cajamarca, Moquegua, Arequipa, Juliaca, and Trujillo.

The international perspective will be equally strong, with participation from the University of Alberta and Fleming College in Canada, as well as the Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI), recognized globally for its contributions to applied mining research and sustainability.

At a time when mining is undergoing rapid transformation, the presence of these institutions highlights a simple reality: the industry’s future competitiveness depends on continuous learning, innovation, and the development of highly skilled professionals.

Learning beyond the congress

The educational experience at WMC 2026 will begin even before the official opening of the congress. On June 22 and 23, participants will have access to a series of specialized short courses delivered by internationally recognized experts. The program will address some of the most important topics shaping mining today, including artificial intelligence in mineral exploration, mining safety, risk management, operational excellence, and sustainability.

Designed for professionals, executives, researchers, and students, these intensive training sessions will provide practical knowledge, global perspectives, and direct engagement with industry specialists. Participants will also receive certification from the Instituto de Ingenieros de Minas del Perú (IIMP), further strengthening the value of the learning experience.

Investing in people is investing in mining’s future

As the mining industry faces increasing demands for critical minerals, decarbonization, digital transformation, and responsible development, investment in human capital has never been more important.

The Academic Pavilion reflects the broader mission of WMC 2026: bringing together industry, academia, governments, innovators, and future leaders to drive Trust, Transformation, and Technology for a thriving and sustainable mining future.

The conversations shaping the next generation of mining will not happen only in boardrooms or mine sites. They will also happen in classrooms, laboratories, research centers, and educational forums such as those featured in Lima.

Whether you are a student exploring career opportunities, a researcher advancing new technologies, or an industry professional seeking to expand your knowledge and network, WMC 2026 offers a unique opportunity to engage with the people and ideas shaping the future of mining.
